Electrical Safety Check: Getting Your Home Ready for Fall and Winter
Add Electrical to Your Fall Task List
Most fall checklists cover weatherstripping and furnace tune-ups. Electrical safety deserves a spot too. A proactive approach prevents hazards and keeps your home running through the darker, colder months when demand spikes.
1. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Between heavier cooking and a working heating system, your detectors matter more than ever. Test every battery. Replace any unit older than 10 years. Make sure you have coverage on every level and outside sleeping areas.
2. Inspect Outlets and Switches
Walk through the house. Look for loose, cracked, or discolored outlets. These are signs of underlying issues and possible fire hazards. Test every GFCI outlet by pressing the test and reset buttons.
3. Examine Extension Cords and Power Strips
Indoor time means more cord use. Check every cord for fraying, cuts, or exposed wire. Never run cords under rugs or furniture. Cords are temporary by design. If you rely on them daily, you need more outlets.
4. Check Your Breaker Panel
Make sure every breaker is labeled. Know where the main is. If breakers trip often, that is a signal, not a fluke. Do not keep resetting without finding the cause.
5. Inspect Indoor and Outdoor Lighting
You will rely on both more as days shrink. Replace burnt bulbs. Check outdoor fixtures for weather damage.
6. Watch Space Heaters
Plug heaters directly into wall outlets. Never into extension cords or power strips. Keep them away from curtains, furniture, and bedding.
7. Schedule a Professional Check
For a thorough look at your system, book a safety inspection. We check for hidden issues, verify code compliance, and assess panel capacity. Call 763-200-5956 or schedule online.
